Personal Injury Protection Coverage and Auto Insurance

When purchasing auto insurance, it is essential to note which coverages are optional and which are required. Laws vary, and your state may mandate personal injury protection (PIP) insurance.

Is Personal Injury Protection Coverage Required in Georgia?
Personal injury protection coverage can provide payments for medical costs and lost wages for drivers and their passengers after an accident, regardless of fault. While PIP is generally required in states with no-fault auto insurance laws, it is not required in Georgia, an at-fault state.  

In an at-fault state, the individual responsible for causing an accident is generally liable for damages. Georgia doesn’t require PIP, but it does require minimum amounts of liability insurance to help pay for third-party injuries or property damage when the policyholder is at fault. As of August 2022, those amounts are as follows:

• Bodily injury liability insurance—$25,000 per person and $50,000 per incident
• Property damage liability insurance—$25,000 per incident

The insurance commissioner in Georgia sets what types of coverage can be offered, and that, along with required minimum amounts, is always subject to change.

What Is Medical Payments Coverage in Auto Insurance?
Medical payments coverage, or MedPay, is optional in Georgia and is similar to PIP in that it helps cover accident-related medical bills for drivers and their passengers, regardless of fault. However, Medpay’s coverage of expenses is more limited than PIP. For example, it doesn’t cover non-medical expenses such as lost income like PIP. Examples of what MedPay covers include:

• Doctor’s appointments
• Hospital visits
• Ambulance fees
• Surgeries
• Funeral expenses
• Dental care
• Nursing care
